INTERVIEW | Ben Johnston announces retirement from rugby league
Ben Johnston has announced his retirement from rugby league, bringing an end to a stellar 13-year career across the domestic and international game.
The 33-year-old will bow out following the Dons’ clash with his former club Halifax Panthers this weekend. He has been asked to lead the teams out at the Eco-Power Stadium.
The York-born stand off joined the Dons in 2021 and played a major role in the promotion back to the Championship in 2023.
“I’ve made the tough decision that I’m going to retire at the end of the year,” Johnston said.
“It’s a bit of a fairytale ending for me because I had many good years at Halifax so it’s the two teams playing that mean the most to me. It’ll be a nice way to sign off.
“I’ve been lucky enough to be surrounded by some really good lads throughout my career. It’s been a great ride.
“I’m ready to spend time with my family and enjoy the next chapter. The time is right for me and I’ve had a great time with the Dons.”
Prior to joining the Dons, Johnston had stints with hometown club York, Halifax, Dewsbury and Castleford.
Dons chief executive Carl Hall said: “Johnno has been a fantastic servant for the club over the past five seasons and we all wish him the very best for the next chapter.
“He’s an incredible character that’s been a massive part of the changing room over the years and we’ll definitely miss his presence.
“We owe him plenty for the part he played in getting us promoted and him and his family will always be welcome back to the club.”
All at the club wish Ben the best for his future.
